iClickCare is an enterprise level, mobile enabled, HIPAA compliant physician collaboration tool available for the iPhone and iPad developed by Click Care LLC. The Click Care system is capable of sharing images, text, audio, and video information in a secure manner.

iClickCare has a web based companion (Click Care Classic) for use on desktop computers.

The Click Care website has an excellent walk through to show how this collaboration tool could help your practice.

iClickCare appears to be an excellent addition to any wound care or home health practice.

Due to the enterprise nature of this app, we are not able to do a full review of this app.

Medical Educator for iOS App Review

Medical Educator is a iOS app by the Medical Educator Team that is designed to help medical students in the UK pass medical student exams.

Obviously, medical students in the UK would be the primary audience for this app, but it still has utility in the US due to the excellent collection of videos in the app - procedures, physical exams, and more.

Some of the jargon/terminology in the app and the promotional material is foreign ("...doctors of SPR grade and above....."), but it is a well organized app that is easy to use.

This app is something for any medical student to download and try out.

Medical Educator for iOS is available for free at the iTunes App Store.

SurgAware iPhone App Review

SurgAware is a point of care reference for the general and specific risks of a number of surgeries. This app is aimed at improving the informed consent process before surgery, and was developed by ConsentCare.

Improving the informed consent process is an excellent concept, and this app does provide useful information regarding the risks of surgery.

This app is far from complete, and lacks a discussion of many important surgical risks such as cardiovascular complications of non-cardiac surgery. Including the frequency of complications might also be useful.

Additionally, this app suffers from slow performance because data is pulled from a web database for each surgery. This also makes this app useless without a good WiFi or 3G signal (like a good portion of the hospital I work at!)

SurgAware is likely to become a useful tool for the discussion of surgical risks with patients when the database of risks is more complete and performance issues are addressed.

SurgAware costs $2.99 and is available from the iTunes App Store.

Medical App Survey - Where do medical professionals find apps?

Our survey of 100 medical professionals located in the USA shows that the favorite method for finding apps is the iTunes App store (52%). Social media, a very hot internet marketing area, follows in a distant second at 21%.

These results suggest that medical app developers should focus considerable effort in preparing the listing for a new app in the iTunes App Store.

LaboratoryGear Medical - iPhone App Review

LaboratoryGear Medical, by Med Gears, is a fast and easy to use iPhone app that includes detailed information on over 250 common laboratory tests.

Lab tests can be found by search, browsing by organ system, and specimen source (blood, urine, CSF, etc.). A favorites list can also be created for commonly reviewed lab tests.

Each lab test entry includes information on the reference range (sometimes known as the "normal" range) for the test, a differential diagnosis for test abnormalities, and a description of the utility of the test. Switching from US to SI units is quick and easy.

As an internal medicine hospitalist, I found myself using LaboratoryGear Medical 1-2 times per day, and I was able to answer my questions very quickly. It is a great asset on teaching rounds with the students and residents.

LaboratoryGear Medical is an easy to use application that will be useful for medical students, residents, and attending physicians.

LaboratoryGear Medical is available in the iTunes App Store and costs $1.99.

STAT Cardiac Clearance

This application is straightforward and easy to use, providing a very useful point of care patient assessment tool.

This app accurately recreates the 2007 ACC/AHA risk assessment algorithm, and this reviewer tested STAT Cardiac Clearance while performing several preoperative risk assessments.

As you can see, this study to determine which iPhone Medical Calculator is the easiest to use is limited because (think of this in the best journal club tradition....)

No control group
Small number of respondents (n = 18)
Only visitors to MedicaliPhone could vote
All options for iPhone medical calculators are not included
No statistical significance (alas, no p values)
Not published in a peer reviewed journal

To address these limitations, a follow up study will be conducted. Stay tuned!

Eponyms for the iPhone

The classic database of medical eponyms by Andrew Yee is available on the iPhone with the Eponyms application marketed by Pascal Pfiffner.

Eponyms has definitions of 1,600 medical eponyms, making it a wonderful tool for students and educators (I used the PalmOS version of this database when I was a medical student - quite helpful!)

Eponyms is free for students, for everyone else it is $1.99.

Eponyms is released under the Apache 2.0 opensource license. Source code can be found on Google Code.

The next-generation of communication and collaboration tools has finally reached dentistry in a meaningful way via the iPhone. Through the use of the iPhone and web-based clinical and practice management software, dentists can manage electronic communications, share and publish information, and stay connected while on the go.

ePocrates on the iPhone - Update

ePocrates announced that work has began on a non-browser based version of their award winning software for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

ePocrates is collecting email addresses for notification when the iPhone version is available.

When complete, the iPhone native version of ePocrates will make the iPhone a much more viable medical smartphone option.

Heart Imaging Technologies (HeartIT) announced July 16, 2007 that WebPax images can viewed on an iPhone.

WebPax is a DICOM compliant, scalable medical image management system developed by HeartIT.

Mobile access to medical images can facilitate consultation with other medical professionals or be useful in discussion with patients. However, the small image size (due to the nature of a mobile device) limits the utility of these images.

No free demo is available.

This free, high quality medical resource gives iPhone users access to drug dosing, drug interaction, drug price, and other useful information in the easy to use ePocrates style through wireless internet access.

ePocrates for PDAs is well known to health care professionals, with over 500,000 active users, including one in four physicians, in the United States.

The only drawback of ePocrates Online is that wireless web access is required to access the content on an iPhone.

ePocrates has announced plans for a version that can be downloaded to your iPhone for 2008.
