Alveolar Gas | Medical App News

Alveolar Gas Medical App for the iPad
A.P. (Pete) Shepherd, Ph.D., a retired Professor of Physiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas, has developed an iPad app for teaching the factors that affect the composition of "Alveolar Gas". A student or instructor can manipulate variables like tidal volume, dead space, and the oxygen consumption rate and see how they affect alveolar PO2 and PCO2. The app is suitable for use either as a classroom demonstration or self-instruction.

In addition to students studying respiratory physiology, health professionals who have found this app useful include residents in anesthesiology and pulmonary medicine, respiratory therapists, and nurse anesthetists. Although the app was released only recently, it is already being used in leading universities and hospitals around the world.

Clinical Pathology Question Bank | Medical App Review

Clinical Pathology Question Bank Medical App for iPhone
The Clinical Pathology Question bank is an iPhone and iPad app developed by Board Vitals, LLC.

This app is an attractive, easy to use board review app designed for physicians preparing for the clinical pathology boards.

Detailed performance feedback and feedback on why a particular option is the best answer is provided, making it a great way to prepare for the test.

As a hospitalist, I am not able to comment on how applicable the content is for the clinical pathology boards, but the answers are appropriate when compared to UpToDate.

The Clinical Pathology Question Bank costs $29.99.

A Lite version of the Clinical Pathology Question Bank is also available.

X-Anatomy | Medical App Review | Cross sectional anatomy app

x-anatomy cross sectional anatomy app for iphone and ipad
X-Anatomy™ is a cross-sectional human anatomy and medical imaging atlas developed by Dr. Francis Isidoro for the iOS platform.  This application has annotated, zoomable CT images of different body areas (head, chest, pelvis, etc) that are commonly encountered in clinical practice.

X-Anatomy is an excellent point of care resource for non-radiologists that review CT and MRI images.  This app is appropriate for medical students, residents, and attending physicians.  Advanced practice nurses and students will also find this a useful app.

A particularly useful feature is the ability to select and follow that structure through the other images for that body area.  This allows you to trace blood vessels, ribs, and other structures and develop a better understanding of the pathway the structures take through the studied body region.  The X-Anatomy video illustrates this feature.

Key Features of X-Anatomy
  • Annotated cross sectional images
  • Zoomable images
  • Follow structures through the entire body region

FH Diagnosis | Medical App Review

FH Diagnosis screen shot on an Apple iPhoneFH Diagnosis is a free iPhone app designed to assist in the diagnosis of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) using the Dutch Lipid, MEDPED, and Simon Broome criteria for FH.

These complex diagnostic criteria are rarely used, except in lipid-specialty clinics, for the diagnosis of potential FH.  This easy to use app provides a tool that any healthcare professional can use to establish a diagnosis of FH and start appropriate treatment for this disorder that can lead to premature cardiovascular death.

The user interface of FH Diagnosis is straight forward, nothing is complicated or difficult to use.

FH Diagnosis is strongly recommended for primary care providers and specialist physicians who manage patients with lipid disorders.

The medical content adviser for FH Diagnosis is Gregory Thomas, MD, MPH, FACC, FASNC.

Dr Thomas is known for co-leading the interdisciplinary team that found atherosclerosis in ancient Egyptian mummies.  (JAMA 2009;302(19):2091-2094.)

This app was created by KKIT Creations LLC using support from Genzyme, a pharmaceutical company.  There appears to be no promotional bias in this app.

Medical App Review - UpToDate

UpToDate for iOS is an essential medical app for on the go physicians like hospitalists.

UpToDate looks great on an iPad, and is easier to read with the larger screen.

The ability to search for information on drugs, diagnosis, and treatment at the point of care is essential when providing medical care for complex patients - and this app delivers!

Additionally, UpToDate allows you to earn CME at the rate of 0.5 hours of AMA Category 1 credit per search.  Most physicians can earn an entire year's worth of CME with this app alone.

The only downside to this app is the cost of an UpToDate subscription, but when viewed in light of the CME, it is a bargain.

UpToDate - UpToDate, Inc.

Find clinical answers at the point of care or anywhere you need them! Now you can access UpToDate's® current, synthesized clinical information — including evidence-based recommendations — quickly and easily on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

Medical App Review: Healthcare Blue Book - Prices for medical services

Healthcare Blue Book is a free medical app developed by CareOperative LLC.  This app lists price ranges and a localized "fair price" for common medical tests, procedures, and physician services.

For example, the Medicare Facility Limiting Price for a high level initial inpatient visit (CPT 99223) is $213 (national base rate).

The Healthcare Blue Book indicates that the fair price for the same service is $333 for my local area.

This app is by no means comprehensive, but it is an interesting tool to evaluate medical costs - making it useful for patients, students, residents, and anyone who would like to learn more about the costs of healthcare services.

Medical App Review - MNA Screening Tool for Malnutrition

MNA (Mini Nutritional Assessment) app for the iPhone and iPad
MNA is a free nutritional screening app developed for Nestle.

This app is easy to use, and uses the validated Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool to assess the risk of malnutrition in patients.

MNA - UKCDesign

MNA is easy to use, and has an option to save patient information for later review.

MNA suffers from an uninspiring user interface and a requirement to enter a patient name to start the screening tool.

However, MNA is the only malnutrition screening tool in the iTunes app store at this time.

Malnutrition is a common, though unrecognized problem.  Adding MNA to your app collection may help you identify patients at risk of malnutrition.

Medical App Review - Journal Club - Evidence Based Medicine App for your iOS Device

Journal Club is an evidence based medicine app developed for iOS devices by a group of physicians at Periphreal Brain LLC.

Journal Club for iPhone - Peripheral Brain, LLC

Journal Club allows you to review results from a growing list of landmark clinical trials at the point of care, making it an excellent resource for teaching medical students and residents, and for discussing treatment plan options with patients.

A unique app that would be useful to medical students, residents, fellows, and attendings.

This app includes links to the original articles and has features for easy sharing.

Consider contributing your medical writing skills to the Wikijournalclub which powers the Journal Club app.  A great item to add to your CV for fellowship applications...

These opinions were formulated after using the Journal Club app for 6 weeks as a teaching attending on an internal medicine hospitalist service, and are completely biased in favor of useful, high quality medical apps such as Journal Club.

Journal Club is the July Medical App of the Month for MedicaliPhone

ACCORD, AFFIRM, COURAGE, COMET, SHOCK, UPLIFT, FACTT. Let’s face it: the sea of evidence-based medicine is vast, and wading through stacks and stacks of JAMA, NEJM, and JACC just isn't feasible. What should be at the top of the reading list?
